COMBINED NRC INSPECTION 50-272/80-34 AND 50-311/80-23 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS NOS.. I *AND 2 We have reviewed the report of your inspection conducted by Mr. J. J.
Kottan during the period December 15-18, 1980.
Our response to the item of noncompliance identified in Appendix A is as follows:
Item of Violation Section 6.8.l of the Technical Specifications requires that procedures be established, implemented and maintained ***
Procedure PD-3.9.017, written pursuant to TS 6.8.1., requires that known.spiked and dqplicate analyses of reactor coolant system chloride, fluoride, and boron be made.
The unknown spikes are required on a quarterly basis.
Contrary to the above requirements, the unknown chloride, fluoride and boron spike analyses were not performed for the first quarter of 1980.
Also the second quarter 1980 fluoride unknown spike analysis was* not performed.
Reply to Item of Violation A review indicates that the quarterly QC analyses were performed and recorded properly before and after the unrecorded period.
During the unrecorded period, a new Chemistry Supervisor was

Since the analyses and documentation thereof were* found. to be proper in the third quarter, this. is interpreted as evidence that the new Chemistry Supervisor self corrected com-pliance with the procedure;. therefore, the undocumented period is.
felt to be an isolated case *.
