1. 0. PURPOSE Toprovide a method to determine airborne iodine concentrations off site under accident conditions.

2.0 REFERENCES

2.1 NRC submittal for Palisades Plant, "Requirements Resulting from Review of Three Mile*Island 2 Accident: Actions Taken in Response to", dated December 27, 1979, Section 2.l.8.b(2).

3.0 PREREQUISITES 3.1 Special Equipment 3.1.1 Special equipment is located in a Company van reserved for use in.

environmental sampling, etc .. The van is located in the plant: parking. lot nea~ the Training- Center.

3.1. 2 Hfgh Volume Air Sampler - battery operated high volume air sam:pler,-Radeco model H-809C or equivalent, AC operated sampler (to be operated via portable generator); or equivalent.

3.1.3 . Two-inch.. particurate .. filter and cartridge holder ..

3.1.4. Airborne iodine cartridge (silver zeolite, silver gel, etc.).

  • .4.0 PRECAUTIONS. AND Lil!ITATIONS

. 4.1 Sampling locations and. frequencies will be determined by the Site .Emergency**

Direc.t.or depending on environmental conditions and population distriqud.ons.

Suggested locations are. indicated on Figµre l~.

4.2 s*ampling *may take place* in: highly contaminated areas.:.. Anti-c~ntamin~tion

  • clothing and respirators may* be needed under these conditions.

. 5.1.3 Place cartridge in sample head with arrow in directio.n of air flow through the cartri_dge and reassemble sample head.

5~1.4 Place particulate pre-filter ~n place to prevent buildup of radioactive particulates on cartridge. Screw on retaining r~ng and attach sample head

.to air sampler .

5.1.5 .Turn on sampler and adjust air flow to 1. 0-2. 0 cfm. Note initial air flow reading and time.when sample collection started. A ten (10) minute sample should be taken.

5.1.6 At the end of 10-minute sample period, note airflow reading and time and turn off sampler.

5.1. 7 Remove cartridge frc.m sample head and place cartridge in polyethylene ba~.

5.2 Analysis 5.2.P Take carfridge to* low background ar.ea or use lead bricks to shield pr9b~ if background radiation levels exceed 300 c?m *

. *.* - .s~ 2.* 2 . Place:- probe: in contact with side away from arrow on cartridge.. Note reading on rate meter after meter has- stabilized*.: .

. 5.2. 3 If range of meter is exceeded, repeat air sample (section 5.1) but decrease sample time. to aEpro,..."i.mately one-half. af.. previous. sample time.**

5.2.4 Cal~ul~te ~irborne iodin~ concentrations using the following equation:.

. C =. (G. 7E-ll) (Rs-Rb) ts 1/2 (F1+Fz)

Where:

C = Concentration (uCi/cm 3 )

Rs = sample count rate (cpm)

., . ~ = background count rate (cpm) .

Fi = initial flow rate (cfm)

F2 = final flow rate (cfm)

I ts = elapsed sample time (minutes)
