Specification Ebasco 300-70 Bearing Metal in~ocouples I.
This specification covers the appl'cation and the instal-lation features of thermocouples for measuring bearing metal temp-era'turee 1 It is not the intent to specify aLL details of design and installation; nevertheless, equipment shall conform in all respects h
to high standards of engineering, design and cwork'anship-SCOPE 2
Material covered in this specification shall comply erich all currently approved standards, safety codes, and test codes of:
STANDARDS ANSI - American National Standards Institute (Formerly USASI)
ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers ISA - Instrument Society of America IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (Formerly hIEE)
ASSAM - American Society of Testing Materials 3
Thermocouples are required for measuring bearing metal temperatures;-Anti-friction bearings (ball or roller) are not re-quired to have bearing thermocouples.
Bearing metal thermocouples
'are required for:
a - Horizontal sleeve bearings b - Nngsbury Type thrust bearings (both loading faces) c - Thrust or plate bearings in vertical rotating equip-ment (both loading facts)'
1 Thermocouple assemblies for enclosed bearings shall be accessible and replaceable from the outside of the machine.
~ 2 Bearings insulated from equipment frames must have the thermocouple hot junction ungrounded from the sheath.
(i.e. mag-nesium oxide packed tip). It shall be the motor Manufacturer's responsibility not to destroy the electrical insulation barrier and CWERAL REQUIR~VZS
Specification Ebasco 900<<70 Bearing Hetal Thezmocouples to maintain insulation betveen the bearing and ground.
All other thermocouples must be gzounded.
~ 3 ALL thezmocouples shall be spring loaded.
(See 4,5-.6 on Pages 2 and 3}.
GD ERAL REQUIR".~g (Cont'd) 4 Each assem>1y sila1L consist of:
~ 1 A 3/16 in. OD, type 316 stainless steel sheath, spring loaded for good metal to metal contact CONSTRUCTli PEA'ZURKS Chromel-Constaatan the~+couple elements of not less than No. 20 AMG vire, packed in magnesium oxide.
Thermocouple to lead wire )unction shall be in a universal
'weatherproof head as shovn in ISA RP L.L Conduit connection to be 3/4 in NPT, extension nipple connection to be 1/2 in. NPT
~ 2 Color coding, terminology, vire, sire Limits of error, fab-rication and emf values shall conform to ISA RP 1.1 -.7.
~ 3 The measuring tip of the thermocouple should be bzought as close as possible to the bearing surface tempezature to be measured HorizontaL motor and equipment bearings shall be drilled radially to
'ithin L/8 in. from the internal surface of the babbit metal.
The hole shall be drilled at some angle from the lower verticaL zadius in the direction of shaft rotation, vhere thg "hot spot" is known to ex-ist, If this position is not practical, from casting design consid-
- eration, an alternate position close to this point may be used.
~4 Installation of thermocoupLe at bearing shall be through 1/2 in.
NPT SS nipple having the thermocouple assembly head screwed on to one end and the other sczeved into the bearing housing. If this method of installation cannot be used due to inaccessibilit vibration or Eor saEety reasons, the specific installation shall be referred to the Purchaser for review.

Specification Ebasco 30l)-70 Bearing Hetal Thermocouples 4.5 (Cont'd)
If an oil seal is used for )acketed bearings the spzing must be strong enough to ovezcome the seal friction as well, CQBSTiZC FEATUiKS (Cont'd)
,6 Sufficient clearance foz the thermocouple sheath shall be provided to allow free movement of the sheath in the bearing metal boring by the force of spzing loading.
However, design should be such as to preclude entrance of foreign matter between the thermocouple and the bearing bore.
Provision shall be made, wheze necessary, to prevent leakage of lube oil or cooling ~ater into the thermocouple head.
~7 Vertical motor plate beazing shall be drilled as close to the underside of the plate as possible.
5 Seller's dimensional drawings showing thermocouple loca-tion and installation are required.
Seller's details.of thezmocouple construction are also required.
Design is sub)ect to Purchaser's review prior to manufactuze.
DRAVIAQS 6
h corrosion resistant durable metal label tag which will serve to identify the thermocouple shall be firmly affQced to the equipment involved before packing.
