SUPPLEMENT 1

SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANTI UNIT 1 (TAC NO. M74418)

By letter dated October 31, 1989, Carolina Power 6 Light Company (CPGL) established a target date of August 1992 for submittal of the Individual Plant Examination (IPE) Report for Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1, to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Subsequently, on March 21,

1991, CP&L requested a

delay of the IPE submittal due to an underestimation of the amount of effort needed to perform comprehensive analyses.

The proposed revised date for the IPE submittal is August 1993.

The staff agrees with the justification for the delay until August 1993.

Generic Letter 88-20 indicates that rather than rely on outside contractors, utilities should maximize the use of internal resources to complete the IPEs, thereby allowing the utilities to retain the knowledge gained by performing the IPEs.

Please continue to keep us informed of any changes affecting the completion of this task.
