Phil, On December 20, 2017, you requested a 90-day extension to the request for additional information for the Davis-Besse NFPA 805 application that was due on January 10, 2018 (see e-mail below). You indicated that an extension was needed because (1) your technical staff is addressing a higher priority issue and (2) the scope of the changes to the PRA model is greater than anticipated. Your request was discussed with Joseph Giitter, Director of the Division of Risk Assessment, and Greg Casto, Acting Deputy Director of the Division of Operating Reactor Licensing.

The NRC staff finds your request for a 90-day extension acceptable. The NRC staff requests that a response to PRA RAI 03 be provided by April 10, 2018.

Phil, By application dated December 16, 2015 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML15350A314), as supplemented by letters dated February 2, March 7, July 28, and December 16, 2016, and January 17 and June 16, 2017 (ADAMS Accession Nos. ML16033A085, ML16067A195, ML16210A422, ML16351A330, ML17017A504, and ML17170A000, respectively), FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (the licensee), submitted a license amendment request (LAR) for Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 1 (DBNPS). The proposed amendment would change the current fire protection program at DBNPS to one based on the National Fire Protection Association Standard 805, Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Light Water Reactor Electric Generating Plants, 2001 Edition, as incorporated into Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 50.48(c).

2 By letter dated October 18, 2016 (ADAMS Accession No. ML16256A066), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff issued a request for additional information (RAI) regarding the LAR. The letter stated, in part, that the due date for probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) RAI 03 will be provided after the staff has reviewed the licensees response to the other RAIs. The staff has completed its review of the licensees RAI responses provided in the supplemental letters. The staff requests that a response to PRA RAI 03 be provided by January 10, 2018. This due date was discussed with you on September 12, 2017.
