SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST FOR PALO VERDE ONSITE PONDS (TAC NO. 65290)

By letter dated May 10, 1987, you requested a change to the Palo Verde Unit 1 Technical Specifications to allow the concentrations of Antimony-124 (Sb-124),

in the secondary system liquid waste discharged to the onsite evaporation

ponds, to exceed 5X10 p Ci/ml for a period not to exceed March 31, 1988.

In order to complete our review of your request, we require additional information.

Specifically, we request that you provide the following:

(1)

For the postulated event discussed in the bases for Specification 3/4. 11. l. 1, provide the results of the analysis which demonstrates that the acceptance criteria for offsite exposure are met at any time during the life of the nuclear station.

This analysis should assume that the concentration of Sb-124 in the discharged waste water is at the requested activity level until March 31, 1988.

(2)

Since the addition of Sb-124 to the onsite pond could represent a

potential new release path for offsite exposure, discuss how Appendix I requirements are met for the proposed change to the Technical Specifications.

t In order to minimize the impact on plant operation, we request that your

'rovide the above information as soon as possible.

If you have any questions regarding this letter, please let me know.

Sincerely, E.

A. Licitra, Senior Project Manager Project Directorate V
