In attachment 2 of its letter dated October 8,

1991, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NHPC) submitted four inservice testing relief requests.

Additional information, as identified in Enclosure 1, is required for the NRC staff to complete its review of one of these relief requests (CTS-RR-1).

The NRC staff discussed the requested additional information in a telephone conference on April 2, 1992, with Hr. Nick Spagnoletti and others on your staff.

In order to complete our review in a timely manner, we request that you respond within 30 days of receipt of this letter.

This requirement affects one respondent and, therefore, is not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under P.L.96-511.

Enclosure Request for Additional Information Concerning Nine Nile Point Nuclear Station Unit No.

1 Inservice Testing Relief Request CTS-RR-1 NMPC is requested to resubmit relief request CTS-RR-1 (containment spray system containment isolation check valves) and include the following points in the submittal:

1.

Describe the burden associated with performing a water flow test.

2.

Describe the burden associated with cutting out one valve of each size to perform disassembly and inspection of the valves and reweld them back in place.

3.

Describe the burden associated with performing an air flow test.

4.

Discuss the feasibility of the various non-intrusive test methods examined.

5.

Discuss the feasibility of using a boroscope to conduct visual inspections on the check valves.

6.

Provide either a vendor drawing or discussion that includes the valve manufacturer and model number.

7.

Provide any history, if available, on the valves from the valve manufacturer.

8.

Provide details of the 1994 proposed modifications for each valve

~ including:

a. valve replacement type (if valve is to be replaced)
b. valve safety function and bases for that function before and after modification
c. type of inservice testing to be conducted on valve after modification In addition, NNPC is requested to include in this relief request a written commitment to perform the modifications during the 1994 refueling outage.
