Dear Mr. Mangan:
Subject:
FSAR Amendment 27 for Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Sincerely,
'The NRC staff has reviewed the following sections of FSAR Amendment 27 for the Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Plant: Section 6.2, 9.5.1, 9.5.4, 9A, 11.2, 11.4, 12.3, 12.5, and Table 15.6-13.
Because of discrepancies in the design description we request the additional information on the Division III diesel starting system seismic qualification, combustible gas control system, and primary containment isolation system identified in the enclosure be provided in order for the staff to complete its review.
A draft of this request for additional information was provided to Don Hill, of your staff, on August 26, 1986.

Re uest For Additional Information From Nia ara Mohawk Power Cor oration Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Docket No. 50-410 The third paragraph is confusing and contradicts Table 3.2-1 and Figure 9.5-46 designation of the seismic classification of piping and components of the Division III diesel starting system.
The first sentence indicates the air receiver is seismic Category I, while the second sentence indicates the receiver
's not seismic Category I.
Page 9.5-43b indicates that the air receiver and the
'nterconnecting piping and components are designed to Category I, ASME Section III, while Figure 9.5-46 indicates only the air receiver meets these requirements.
Please reconcile the discrepancy and also indicate the location of the air dryers in relation to the seismic Category I interface.
Explain the deletion of seismic qualification to IEEE 344-1975 of the air dryer system in FSAR Amendment 27.
2.
Pa e 6.2-73 and 74 Item 11 page 6.2-74 was deleted by Amendment 27 since the applicant claims that it was redundant to item 3 on page 6.2-74.
Item 11 indicated that the initiation of the recombiners is based on manual actuation from the control, room.
Item 3 does specify manual initiation, but not from the control room.
Please clarify.
3.
Table 6.2-57 a
e 1
The summary of incorporated
- changes, page 15 (SIC-15), indicated a change in the combustible gas monitoring system operation from continuous to manual.
Amendment 27 specifies continuous.
Please Clarify.
4.
Table 6.2-56 2 of 24 For penetration No. Z-4A, under valve 2FWS*AOV23A potential bypass leakage
- path, a superscript note (30) was added to "yes".
This was not in the previous amendment,,nor was this change indicated in the SIC list.
Please correct.
