Subject:
Safety-Related Instrument Tubing and Supports Program for Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit 2 In our letters of October 5, 1983, and November 5, 1984, the staff approved a
safety-related instrument tubing and supports program for Nine Mile Point Unit 2 as described in those letters.
The general use of compression fittings was not part of the approved program.
Subsequently, in FSAR Amendment 22 the Niagara Mohawk modified the instrument tubing and supports program to include the use of compression fittings as a substitute for welded fittings, without providing information to justify their use.
In response to our letter of February 14,
- 1986, Niagara Mohawk in a letter dated March 31, 1986, provided information justifying the use of compression fittings.
The letter further indicated that the information will be incorporated into FSAR Table 3.9A-15 in Amendment 26 to the FSAR.
We have reviewed the Niagara Mohawk's justification for the use of compression fittings in the instrument tubing and supports program and we find it acceptable.
In addition to ASME Section III Code requirements, the letter indicated that steps are taken to assure that proper fit-up and installation prior to hydrotest is performed and documented.
Compliance with these requirements provides a
quality level that is commensurate with the importance of the instrument tubing and supports program and the safety functions of the attached fluid systems.
Sincerely, cc:
