SAFETY EVALUATION, DECOUPLING OF THE REACTOR BUILDING/SCREENHOUSE Re:

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit No.

1 In a letter dated September 12, 1983 you informed us of your intent to decouple the reactor building from the screenhouse as a long term modification to minimize cracking in the common wall to both structures.

By letter dated January 18, 1984 you provided details of your plans for the modification.

On May 17, 1984 you informed us that the modification was completed and since then the existing reactor building crack began to close and return to its unrestrained shape.

Based on our evaluation of your submittal, we find your action resolves our concern regarding the reactor building wall crack.

A copy of our Safety Evaluation is enclosed.
