Bordenick, OELD On June 7, 1983, members of your staff, as well as, representatives of Stone and llebster Engineering Corporation (S/lEC) met with members of the NRC staff to discus's compliance to GDC 51 (fracture Prevention of Containment Pressure Boundary) for Nine llile Point 2..A copy of the meeting sumary of that meeting is attached.

We appreciate the effort your staff expended in meeting with our staff to assist us in expediting the review of this issue.

This review is concerned with the ferritic materials of the containment pressure boundary, specifically those which have been applied in the fabrication of the drywell head, equipment hatch, personnel locks, penetrations and fluid system components.

In the process of this review, our staff will review a large number of detailed drawings and materials documents to determine the critical materials which will require a detailed review to assure the material under operating, maintenance,

testing, and postulated accident conditions, will behave in a non-brittle manner and the probability of rapidly propogating fracture is minimized.

As a result of the meeting on June 7, 1983, significant progress has been made towards identifying these critical materials.

Additional information which will be needed in continuing this review was identified during the meeting and in the meeting summary.

Additional contact will be necessary between our staff and yours, from time to time, to help us identify these critical materials.

The assistance of your staff and their consultants in achieving this goal in a timely fashion will be critical.

Upon identifying the critical materials for which a detailed review of the fabrication and testing performed will be necessary, specific information will be identified to be submitted to complete our evaluation of the Nine tlile Point 2 compliance to GDC 51.

Your staff's assistance in our evaluation of this issue to date is appreciated.

We look forward to your continued assistance in this effort in order to complete our evaluation in a timely manner.

Sincerely, G.'i <4aEI3. Si~pd bP t 8308190490 83072i PDR ADOCK 05000410 A
