Relief Request Number RR-46 for the Third 10-Year Inservice Inspection Interval (TAC Nos. ME1249 and ME1250), dated April 7, 2010, ADAMS Accession Number ML100491269.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

By letter dated March 10, 2016 (i.e., Reference 1), Duke Energy Progress, LLC (Duke Energy),

submitted a proposed alternative (i.e., 10 CFR 50.55a Relief Request ISI-06) for the fourth 10-year inservice inspection interval for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP), Unit Nos. 1 and 2. The proposed alternative, which pertains to the inspection of control rod drive (CRD) housing welds, includes a list of applicable CRD housing welds for both Brunswick units.

During NRC review of proposed alternative ISI-06, it was noted that the Unit 2 CRD housing weld identification numbers submitted differ from the identification numbering of the same welds in the prior 10-year inservice interval request (i.e., Relief Request RR-46), which was submitted by letter dated May 8, 2009 (i.e., Reference 2), and approved by NRC letter dated April 7, 2010 (i.e., Reference 3).

The Unit 2 CRD housing weld identification numbers in the March 10, 2016, request were taken from controlled plant drawings that depict the component welds, whereas the Unit 2 CRD

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 of 3 housing weld identification numbers in the May 8, 2009, request were taken from a plant database system used to track inservice inspection activities. These identification numbers only differ with respect to the "system designator" portion used for Unit 1 versus Unit 2. For example, weld 2C12-CRD14-07-SW2 was identified as weld 2C11-CRD14-07-SW2 in the May 8, 2009, request. This designation is incorrect as stated in the May 8, 2009, submittal. The designations noted in the March 10, 2016, submittal are correct as shown. The scope of applicable Unit 2 welds in the 2009 and 2016 requests is identical.

The plant drawing versus database discrepancy for the Unit 2 weld identification numbers has been entered into the Corrective Action Program for resolution. A similar weld identification number discrepancy does not exist in the Unit 1 documentation.

No regulatory commitments are contained in this letter.

Please refer any questions regarding this submittal to Mr. Lee Grzeck, Manager - Regulatory Affairs, at (910) 457-2487.

Sincerely, A!r.:.~~6'~

Director - Organizational Effectiveness Brunswick Steam Electric Plant WRM/wrm
