REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELATING TO NRC STAFF REVIEW OF MASONRY WALL ISSUES AT DIABLO CANYON (TAC NOS.

74142 AND 74143)

As a result of our continuing review of the seismic qualification of masonry walls at Diablo Canyon, we have identified several issues in addition to those discussed in our letter of March 20, 1990 on this subject.

Enclosed is a request for additional information relating to these issues.

In order to achieve timely closure of our concerns in this area, we request that you address each issue identified in the enclosure by May 20, 1990.

Issue No.

6 Evaluation of Capability of Masonry Walls to Withstand OBE Demonstrate that the masonry walls at Diablo Canyon can withstand the Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE), using the appropriate load combinations and criteria.

Issue No.

7 Consideration of Construction Tolerances Demonstrate that appropriate construction tolerances (i.e., variations in the placement of the vertical reinforcing steel) have been accounted for in evaluating the seismic capability of the masonry walls at Diablo Canyon.

Issue No. 8 Consideration of Material Property Uncertainties Demonstrate that material property uncertainties (i.e., the assumed masonry modulus of elasticity) have been properly accounted for in evaluating the seismic capability of the masonry walls at Diablo Canyon.

9 Analysis of Safety-Related Equipment Supported by Masonry Walls Demonstrate that any safety-related equipment supported by the masonry walls at Diablo Canyon has been seismically qualified for the appropriate response
