53171AND 61721)
The purpose of this letter is to forward the NRC staff's safety evaluation (SE) on modifications made at Diablo Canyon to improve the reliability of the reactor trip system.
This was accomplished by installing circuitry to automatically actuate the reactor trip breaker shunt trip attachment.
The enclosed SE finds the installation to be acceptable.
By letter dated December 20, 1983, you made a commitment to install the

Your letter also responded to 13 plant-specific issues identified in the NRC staff',s August 10, 1983 SER on the generic Westinghouse design.
On Nay 16, 1984, the staff issued an SER evaluating the plant-specific aspects of the installation of an automatic shunt trip at Diablo Canyon.
In the Nay 16, 1984 SER, the staff found the Diablo Canyon installation to be acceptable, but identified five plant-specific issues that had not been resolved at that time.
By letters dated Nay 24, 1984; June 6, 1984; June 27, 1984; November 7, 1984; December 6, 1985; November 20, 1986; and December 9, 1988, you satisfactorily addressed these issues.
