Dear Mr. Tucker:

SUBJECT:

  • RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 88-05 FOR OCONEE AND MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION.(TAO NOs. 68931, 68932, 68933, 68327, AND 68328)

On March 17, 1988, the NRC staff issued Generic Letter 88-05 "Boric Acid Corrosion of Carbon Steel Reactor Boundary Components in PWR Plants."

In this letter we requested that you provide assurances that programs have been implemented at your stations that address the corrosive effects of reactor coolant system leakage at less than technical specification limits.

The generic letter identified four considerations which your programs should iGn.cLisu1de.

In letters dated May 23 and August 1, 1988, you responded to Generic Letter 88-05, describing your commnitments to boric acid leakage monitoring and preventive programs at your stations.

By subsequent letter of March1, 1989, you deferred the scheduled program implementation date of March 1, 1989 for Catawba until June 1, 1989.

We understand from these submittals and from discussions with your staff that the programs for Oconee and McGuire are now in place dealing with boric acid leakage that pote'ntially could affect the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.

This fulfills your requirement in responding to Generic Letter 88-05 for Oconee and McGuire.

As discussed in Generic Letter 88-05, you should maintain, in auditable form, records of the program and results obtained from implementation of the programs. These records may be subject to future auditing.

This completes our effort under the subject TAC numbers for Oconee and McGuire Nuclear Stations.

Sincerely,

/S/

Dear Mr. Tucker:

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 88-05 FOR OCONEE AND MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION (TAC NOs. 68931, 68932, 68933, 68327, AND 68328)

On March 17, 1988, the NRC staff issued Generic Letter 88-05 "Boric Acid Corrosion of Carbon Steel Reactor Boundary Components in PWR Plants." In this letter we requested that you provide assurances that programs have been implemented at your stations that address the corrosive effects of reactor coolant system leakage at less than technical specification limits.

The generic letter identified four considerations which your programs should include.

In letters dated May 23 and August 1, 1988, you responded to Generic Letter 88-05, describing your commitments to boric acid leakage monitoring and preventive programs at your stations. By subsequent letter of March 1, 1989, you deferred the scheduled program implementation date of March 1, 1989 for Catawba until June 1, 1989. We understand from these submittals and from discussions with your staff that the programs for Oconee and McGuire are now in place dealing with boric acid leakage that potentially could affect the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.
