Please find enclosed the final Eberline Analytical radiological analyses results for the subsurface soil samples collected on Thursday, December 4, 2014 within the former Ford Nuclear Reactor (FNR) outdoor storage ports area.

Eight (8) soil samples were collected within the former storage ports area and one (1) subsurface soil sample was collected as a background soil sample approximately 75' to the north of the storage ports location. Samples were collected at a depth of 13' using direct push equipment. One column of 13' represented one soil sample location.

Also enclosed is the soil sampling grid pattern used to sample the former FNR storage ports location and diagrams of the outdoor area that includes the 52' x 10'(16 meter x 3 meter) storage ports area.

The sample numbers are as follows:

  • Represent the three split soil samples shared with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for independent analyses.

2 Summary by FNR Decommissioning Staff C-14 was below MDA (approximately 0.5 pCi/g) in all samples Gross alpha in all soil samples were either below the background soil values of 3.68 +/- 1.45 and 3.14 +/- 1.32 pCi/g or below MDA (approximately 2 pCi/g)

Gross beta in all soil samples were either below the background soil values of 15.5 +/- 2.2 and 6.84

+/- 1.86 pCi/g or below MDA (approximately 3 pCi/g)

H-3 was below MDA (approximately 3.5 pCi/g) in all samples For the gamma emitting isotopes: Ag-1 08m, Ag-1 1Om, Ba-1 33, Co-60, Cs-1 34, Cs-1 37, Eu-1 52, Eu-154, and Mn-54:

  • Positive results above MDA were detected in UM-2014-12-04-01 (DUP / the 'background' sample),

one of the background soil duplicates for Co-60 at 0.0449 +/- 0.0270, MDA = 0.0415 pCi/g.

  • Positive results above MDA were detected in UM-2014-12-04-04 for Ba-133 at 0.237 +/- 0.087 pCi/g, MDA = 0.137 pCi/g and for Eu-1 52 at 0.241 +/- 0.311 pCi/g, MDA = 0.203 pCi/g.
  • All other samples were below MDA (approximately 0.2 pCi/g or less).
  • All positive results are well below the soil DCGLs and the MDAs are good.
