5. Federal Register dated January 15, 2014 (79 FR 2700), TSTF-523, "Generic Letter 2008-01, Managing Gas Accumulation," Using the Consolidated Line Item Improvement Process Ladies and Gentlemen:

References 1 through 4 provided the nine month responses to Generic Letter 2008-01, Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems, for Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit Nos. I and 2 (BSEP);

Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (SHNPP); H. B. Robinson Steam Electric Plant, Unit No. 2 (HBRSEP); Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 (CNS); McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 (MNS); and Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2, and 3 (ONS). These letters Included various regulatory commitments (see Attachment 1) associated with the submittal of a license amendment request (LAR) to address Technical Specification (TS) issues, pending NRC approval of a related Technical Specification Task Force (TSTF) Traveler. Following the completion of the development process, TSTF-523, Revision 2, Generic Letter 2008-01, Managing Gas Accumulation, was issued. The Notice of Availability for TSTF-523 was published in the Federal Register on January 15, 2014 (Reference 5).

Duke Energy's evaluation of TSTF-523 is continuing. Additional time is needed to complete the evaluation, and to prepare, process, and submit an LAR. Therefore, Duke Energy is revising the commitments to complete the evaluation and provide a schedule for submittal of an LAR by October 15, 2014. The revised regulatory commitments are included in Attachment 1. Duke Energy believes that the actions completed in response to Generic Letter 2008-01 provide confidence that safety will be preserved during the extended evaluation period that the revised regulatory commitments afford.

Please address any comments or questions regarding this matter to Michael K. Leisure at (980) 373-3619 (Mike.Leisure@ duke-energy.com).

I declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing is true and correct. Executed on July 14,2014.

Sincerely, Benjamin C. Waldre6' Vice President - Corporate Governance and Operations Support MKL Attachment
