BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2- REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING REACTOR VESSEL SURVEILLANCE CAPSULE WITHDRAWAL SCHEDULES (TAC NOS. MF1929 AND MF1930)

Dear Mr. Larson:

By letter dated May 28, 2013, 1 FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (the licensee) submitted a request to revise the reactor vessel surveillance capsule withdrawal schedules for the Beaver Valley Power Station, Units 1 and 2. To complete its review, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff requests responses to the enclosed questions.

The draft question was sent to Mr. Thomas Lentz, of your staff, to ensure that the question was understandable, the regulatory basis for the question was clear, and to determine if the information was previously docketed. On December 4, 2013, Mr. Lentz agreed that you would provide a response by January 10, 2014.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PROPOSED REVISION TO REACTOR VESSEL SURVEILLANCE CAPSULE WITHDRAWAL SCHEDULES FIRSTENERGY NUCLEAR OPERATING COMPANY BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-334 AND 50-412 By letter dated May 28, 2013, 1 FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company submitted a request to revise the reactor vessel {RV) surveillance capsule withdrawal schedules for the Beaver Valley Power Station, Units 1 and 2 (BVPS-1 and BVPS-2). In order to complete its review, the staff requires additional information.

Appendix H to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50 states, "[e]ach capsule withdrawal and the test results must be the subject of a summary technical report to be submitted, as specified in§ 50.4, within one year of the date of capsule withdrawal, unless an extension is granted by the Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation." Electric Power Research Institute's "Materials Reliability Program: Coordinated PWR [pressurized-water reactor] Reactor Vessel Surveillance Program {CRVSP) Guidelines {MRP-326)," dated December 2011, 2 states that BVPS-1 Capsule X "is planned to be withdrawn at a fluence of 5.01 x 10 19 n/cm 2 in 2013."
