Southern California Edison Company 23 PARKER STREET IRVINE. CALIFORNIA 92718 F. R. NANDY June 4 1990 TELEPHONE MANAGER OF NUCLEAR LICENSING (714) 587-5400 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention: Document Control Desk Washington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Confirmation of Spent Fuel Pool Cooling System Thermal Performance Previously Included in Amendment Application No.

182 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 The purpose of this letter is to confirm the thermal hydraulic performance of the Unit 1 Spent Fuel Pool Cooling System that was included in Amendment Application No. 182 and associated Proposed Change No. 224 (submitted by letter dated May 16, 1990).

The calculations that supported the cooling system thermal performance described in those documents were characterized as preliminary because the independent review and verification process had not been completed when the amendment application was submitted.

Those calculations have now been independently verified and have been confirmed as being accurate. Specifically, the results summarized in Table 1 of the May 16, 1990 cover letter (and in Section II of PCN-224) are confirmed as correct. We have repeated these results in the enclosure for your convenience. This completes our action to confirm the correctness of these results.

If you have any questions or comments on this subject, please contact me.

Very truly yours, AA No182.SN Enclosure cc:
