SUBJECT:
BOARD NOTIFICATION - CORE SUPPORT BARREL MISORIENTATION, SAN ONOFRE UNIT 2 (BOARD NOTIFICATION 81-y6)
By letter dated November 12, 1981, the Southern California Edison Company (SCE) advised the NRC staff that on October 31, 1981, the San Onofre 2 reactor vessel core support barrel was installed in the reactor vessel out of the correct orientation. The SCE letter informing the NRC staff of this occurrence is enclosed. A written report will be submitted by the applicant within 30 days, and will be forwarded to the Board when it is received. This occurrence may be related to the reactor vessel misorientation discussed in Section 5.3.4 of the Staff's Safety Evaluation Report, NUREG-0712, issued on February 6, 1981.
Since this action involves new information on matters which may have safety significance, it is being forwarded for the Board's information.

Docket No. 50-361 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 2 This letter confirms verbal notification on November 12, 1981 of a condition discovered in construction which is considered potentially reportable in accordance with 10CFR50.55(e).
During operations performed in preparation for fuel loading, the Unit 2 Core Support Barrel was removed for high pressure hydro cleaning and subsequently replaced. A review of data obtained as a result of core indexing verification detected a misorientation between the Core Support Barrel and Reactor Pressure Vessel which was incompatible with design disclosure documents.
We are performing an.evaluation of this condition and will submit an appropriate report in accordance with 10CFR50.55 (e)(3).
