NOTICE OF INTENT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT AND CONDUCT SCOPING PROCESS FOR LICENSE RENEWAL FOR BYRON STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MF1834 AND MF1835)

Dear Mr. Gallagher:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received your application dated May 29, 2013 for the renewal of operating license nos. NPF-37 and NPF-66 for Byron Station, Units 1 and 2, respectively.

In support of the application and in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 51 and 10 CFR Part 54, Exelon Generating Company, LLC (Exelon), submitted an environmental report (ER). This letter provides information related to the NRC staff's review of the Byron Station, Units 1 and 2, ER The NRC has prepared a Notice of Intent advising the public that the NRC intends to gather information necessary to prepare a plant-specific supplement to the Commission's "Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants" (NUREG-1437), related to the review of the application for the renewal of the Byron Station, Units 1 and 2, operating licenses. Enclosed is a copy of the Notice of Intent, which has been forwarded to the Office of the Federal Register for publication.

Pursuant to 10 CFR 51.28, Exelon is invited to participate in the environmental scoping process.

As discussed in the enclosed notice, the NRC is providing the public with the opportunity to participate in two environmental scoping meetings to be held Tuesday, August 20,2013. The meetings will be held at the Byron Forest Preserve District, 7993 N River Rd, Byron, Illinois, 61010. The first session will be held in the afternoon, and the second session, covering the same subjects, will be held in the evening. The NRC staff will present an overview of the environmental review process and will describe how the process will be implemented for the review of the Byron Station, Units 1 and 2, license renewal application. Exelon is invited to participate in both sessions of the meeting as a member of the public.

A separate NRC meeting notice with a more detailed agenda is forthcoming. You will be provided a copy of that notice.
