REQUEST FOR VOLUNTARY RESPONSE TO PETITION FROM UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS REGARDING COMPLIANCE WITH TITLE 10 OF THE CODE OF FEDERAL REGULA TIONS (10 CFR), PART 50, APPENDIX A, GENERAL DESIGN CRITERIA 44, "COOLING WATER," AND 10 CFR 50.49, "ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION" By letter dated July 29,2011 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML11213A030), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received a Petition pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR),
Section 2.206 from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) requesting that a demand for information be issued to the boiling-water reactor licensees with Mark I and Mark 1/ design regarding compliance with 10 CFR 50, Appendix A, General Design Criteria 44, "Cooling water,"
and 10 CFR 50.49, "Environmental qualification."
As Petition Manager, I would like to inform you that you have the right to submit a voluntary response to the issues identified in the Petition in accordance with NRC Management Directive 8.11, "Review Process for 10 CFR 2.206 Petitions" (ADAMS Accession No. ML041770328).
