REVISED REVIEW SCHEDULE REGARDING THE APPLICATION FROM PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MD8528 AND MD8529)
Dear Mr. Schimmel:
By letter dated April 11,2008, Nuclear Management Company, LLC, now known as Northern States Power Company, Minnesota, submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of the Federal Regulations Part 54, to renew the operating license for Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2, for review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff).
The schedule for publishing the final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement is being extended from October 22, 2010, to February 4, 2011. The NRC has several ongoing license renewal reviews on similar schedules, and any delay in resolving technical issues in one project affects review schedules of other projects. Therefore, the schedule is being extended due to staff scheduling conflicts and to allow sufficient time to fully meet the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Prairie Island Indian Community.
The extension on the environment review is not expected to adversely impact the schedule for a decision on license renewal since the staff is evaluating the effect of recent operating experience issues as part of the safety review. Staff is currently reviewing your annual update to the license renewal application which included additional information on the Buried Piping and Tank Inspection Program, and Class 1 Small-Bore Piping Program.
