REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE APPLICATION FOR LICENSE RENEWAL (TAC NO' ME1587) r Sir:

By letter dated July 19, 2010, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested additional information necessary to allow processing of our research reactor license renewal application (License R-84, Docket 50-170)., We were requested to provide a response within 45 days, or by September 3, 2010.

We are unable to provide all of the requested information by the September 3 deadline.

Because of other operational commitments for our engineering staff, we will not be able to complete answers to many of the SAR-related technical questions for several more weeks. Also, the analyses for Chapters 4 and 13 of the.Safety Analysis Report were performed under contract by General Atomics. Two or three of the questions concerning those analyses, must be referred to GA for ans-c,,rs wjtl.a mod1ificationtQ..the contract.

Because of government funding constraints, those questions will probably not be answered until late 2011.

For these reasons, we request an extension of the September 3 deadline until October 8, 2010 for answers to most of the questions and an extension until December 31, 2011 for the answers to the questions that must be referred to GA.
