June 4, 2010 Mr. Robert J. Agasie Reactor Director Nuclear Reactor Laboratory Room 130 Mechanical Engineering Building 1513 University Avenue Madison, WI 53706-1572

SUBJECT:

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, DETERMINATION OF ACCEPTABILITY AND SUFFICIENCY FOR DOCKETING AND OPPORTUNITY FOR A HEARING REGARDING THE APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL OF FACILITY LICENSE NO.

R-74 FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN NUCLEAR REACTOR (TAC NO.

ME1585)

Dear Mr. Agasie:

By letter dated May 9, 2000, as supplemented on October 17, 2008, the University of Wisconsin (UW) submitted an application to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for renewal of Facility Operating License No. R-74 for the University of Wisconsin Nuclear Reactor.

Based on initial review of the application, the NRC staff determined that UW submitted sufficient information such that the application is acceptable for docketing in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Sections 50.33 and 50.34. However, the NRC staffs determination does not preclude request for additional information as the review proceeds.

Enclosed is a copy of the notice of acceptance of the application for docketing being sent to the Office of the Federal Register for publication. The notice provides the opportunity to request a hearing and to file a petition for leave to intervene.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Christian B. Cowdrey of my staff, at 301-415-2758 or via email at Christian.Cowdrey@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Jessie Quichocho, Acting Chief Research and Test Reactors Licenseing Branch Division of Policy and Rulemaking Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket No. 50-156
