NRC Regulatory Issue Summary 2009-13, Emergency Response Data System Upgrade from Modem to Virtual Private Network Appliance.

Dear Sir or Madam:

The following information is being supplied in accordance with the 10 CFR 50, Appendix E, Se.ctio.nVl.'3,.b requirement that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) be notified at least 30 days, prior to any change that could affect the transmission format and computer communication protocol to 'the Emergency Response Data System (ERDS). In accordance with Regulatory Issue Summary 2009-13, Indiana Michigan Power Company contacted the ERDS support desk on January 12, 2010, to notify the NRC of our intent to participate in the voluntary program to transition ERDS from modem-based communications to virtual private network (VPN) appliance technology.

We anticipate a complete transition from the modem to the VPN appliance in 2010, pending coordinated testing and scheduling with the NRC's ERDS transition team. The transition will not occur prior to February 11, 2010, to ensure compliance with the 30-day notification requirement of 10 CFR 50, Appendix E.

Upgrade of the ERDS modem to VPN represents a voluntary enhancement. There are no new or revised commitments in this letter. Should you have any questions, please contact Mr. James M.

Petro, Jr., RegUlatory Affairs Manager, at (269) 466-2489.

Sincerely,
