By letter dated October 2, 2009, Southern California Edison (SCE) requested relief from the inspection coverage requirements of American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code Case N-729-1, as conditioned by Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations 50.55a(g)(6)(ii)(D), for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), Units 2 and 3, for the third 10-year inservice inspection interval. SCE staff discussed the request with staff from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in a telephone call on November 18, 2009. The NRC staff has reviewed your request and has determined that the information specified in the attached Request for Additional Information (RAI) is needed to complete its evaluation.
In order for the staff to complete its review on the schedule requested, we request that you submit your response to the enclosed RAI as soon as possible. Please contact me if SCE would like to have another conference call to discuss the RAI.
