Response to NRC Generic Letter 2008-01 ," dated February 17, 2009 (Agencywide Document Access and Management System [ADAMS] Accession No. ML090580197)

Dear Sirs:

Subject:

Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS)Units 1, 2, and 3 Docket Nos. STN 50-528, 50-529, and 50-530 Revision to Commitment Completion Date Associated with NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems" In the referenced letter, APS reported the results of the laser templating performed in Unit 1. Based on the results, APS committed to certain actions to further address the issues identified in NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems." This letter provides notification that APS finds it necessary to extend the completion date for one of those actions.Specifically, in the enclosure of the referenced letter, commitment no. 18, page 17, APS committed to: "Complete UT examination of all remaining Priority 2, 3, and 4 locations identified by laser templating as deviating by more than one quarter inch (1/4")from horizontal." This action was scheduled to be completed by April 30, 2009.A member of the STARS (Strategic Teaming and Resource Sharing) Alliance Callaway

'A ATTN: Document Control Desk U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Revision to Commitment Completion Date Associated with NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems" Page 2 This letter provides notification of the extension of that completion date to June 30, 2009. The extension of this date will not affect the completion of any other commitment.

With the exception of six locations, APS engineering has completed ultrasonic testing (UT) of the remaining locations in Unit 1 identified by laser templating as deviating by more than one quarter inch (1/4") from horizontal.

The six remaining locations are not readily accessible and additional time is required to complete the UT examinations.

APS has evaluated the impact of extending the due date and has determined that this change will not impact the completion date of any other activity associated with the Generic Letter or the conclusion that the subject systems remain capable of performing their intended safety functions.

APS has evaluated the commitment change and has determined that it is consistent with internal commitment management procedures.

APS makes no further commitments in this correspondence.

Should you need further information regarding this notification, please contact Russell Stroud, Licensing Section Leader, at (623) 393-5111.Sincerely,* DCM/SAB/RAS/DFS/
