Dear Sirs:

Subject:

Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS)

Units 1, 2, and 3 Docket Nos. STN 50-528, 50-529, and 50-530 Revision to Commitment Completion Date Associated with NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems" In the referenced letter APS committed to certain actions to address the issues identified in NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems."

This letter provides notification that APS finds it necessary to extend the completion date for one of the actions. APS has evaluated the commitment change and has determined that it is consistent with internal commitment management procedures.

Specifically, in the enclosure of the referenced letter, Section B, page 30, APS committed to:

"Complete PVNGS-specific evaluations to develop gas volume acceptance criteria for each segment of SI [safety injection] discharge piping upstream of the normally closed containment isolation valves."

This action was scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2009.

ATTN: Document Control Desk U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Revision to Commitment Completion Date Associated with NRC Generic Letter 2008-01, "Managing Gas Accumulation in Emergency Core Cooling, Decay Heat Removal, and Containment Spray Systems" Page 2 This letter provides notification of the extension of that completion date to June 15, 2009. The extension of this date will not affect the completion of any other commitments.

APS engineering has completed preliminary evaluations for each segment of the SI discharge piping and gas volume acceptance criteria have been developed.

However, additional time is required to incorporate the evaluation results into the pipe stress calculations. APS has evaluated the impact of extending the due date and has determined that this change will not impact the completion date for procedure changes incorporating the gas volume acceptance criteria.

APS makes no further commitments in this correspondence. Should you need further information regarding this notification, please contact Russell Stroud, Licensing Section Leader, at (623) 393-5111.

Sincerely, DCM/SAB/RAS/DFS/gat cc:
