Dear Sir or Madam:

This letter provides Southern California Edison's (SCE's) 3-month supplemental response as requested by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in its letter provided by Reference 1.

SCE plans to complete the evaluation required by Generic Letter (GL) 2008-01

[Reference 3] and provide the results of this evaluation in its 9-month response submittal. The evaluation is based on walkdowns completed prior to the issuance of GL 2008-01 and design configuration control as stated in Reference 2. The evaluation being performed bounds both San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Units 2 P.O. Box 128 San Clemente, CA 92674-0128 949-368-3780 Fax 949-368-3770 w af<Z

Document Control Desk September 12, 2008 and 3. Because SCE plans to complete the evaluation for Units 2 and 3 at the time of the 9-month response, separate 9-month supplemental submittals for each unit are not anticipated. If SCE does not complete the evaluation as currently planned, a commitment to provide a supplemental submittal will be made in the 9-month response.

The 9-month response will provide:,(1) a description of the results of the evaluation that was performed in response to the GL; (2) a description of all corrective actions that SCE determined were necessary; and (3) a statement regarding which corrective actions were completed, the schedule for completing the remaining corrective actions, and the basis for that schedule. The 9-month response will also include the reviews of the licensing basis, the design drawings, and testing and system operating procedures.

Other potential long-term actions that are identified in the GL will be addressed in SCE's 9-month response and will follow industry guidance available at that time.

Should you have any questions, please contact Ms. Linda Conklin at (949) 368-9443.

Sincerely, cc:

' E. E. Collins, Regional Administrator, NRC Region IV N. Kalyanam, NRC Project Manager, San Onofre Units 2 and 3 G. G. Warnick, NRC Senior Resident Inspector, San Onofre Units 2 and 3
