June 15, 2004 Mr. Christopher M. Crane, President and Chief Nuclear Officer Exelon Generation Company, LLC 4300 Winfield Road Warrenville, IL 60555
SUBJECT:
DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 2 AND 3, AND QUAD CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI) REGARDING ALTERNATIVE SOURCE TERM AMENDMENT REQUEST (TAC NOS. MB6530, MB6531, MB6532, AND MB6533)
Dear Mr. Crane:
By letter dated October 10, 2002, Exelon Generation Company (Exelon) submitted an amendment request to support application of an alternative source term (AST) at Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Units 2 and 3, and Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2.
By letter dated August 4, 2003, Exelon responded to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff request for additional information (RAI) on the meteorological data and atmospheric dispersion factors supporting the AST amendment request. By letter dated October 31, 2003, Exelon submitted corrected meteorological data in response to additional NRC RAIs on meteorology. On May 18, 2004, NRC staff informed your staff that we had identified concerns with the latest meteorological information submitted by Exelon. During a telephone call with your staff on May 26, 2004, your staff confirmed that there were errors in the meteorological data files and stated their intent to correct the errors and recalculate the atmospheric dispersion factors. During the May 26, 2004, telephone call NRC requested that the corrected meteorological information be submitted to NRC and that Exelon either verify that current NRC guidance in this area is being followed or provide justification for any deviations. On June 7, 2004, your staff agreed to respond to this RAI by August 3, 2004.
Please contact me at 301-415-2863 if your staff has any questions about this RAI.
Sincerely,
/RA/
