Date and Manner AEC was Informed Mr. Vincent P. McMahon, SMUD Quality Assurance Director, telephoned J. L. Crews on June 19, 1972. Additional information was obtained from Mr. McMahon by R. T. Dodds on June 26, 1972.
B.
Pescription of Construction Deficiency Three potential crack indications were observed in the surface of fillet welds on mounting pads of legs for one of the steam generator lateral supports during a visual examination at the site. The steam generator lateral supports are made of T-1 steel, the welding of which is very susceptible to cracking. The support had previously been ultrasonically tested by the manufacturer (LAMCO, El Cajon, California) before shipment to the site.

The indications were examined by experts from Bechtel's San Francisco
,
office.
The indications were found to be cracks and will be repaired by grinding and rewelding. The welds will then be magnetic particle
,
tested a few days after welding and again several months later.
The licensee plans to report these construction deficiencies to RO in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.55.
