Dear Mr. Hunter:

SUBJECT:

Emergency Diesel Generators REFERENCES:

1) NRC letter dated 2/24/86, Gagliardo to Lee (G-86099)

2) PSC letter dated 1/17/86, Gahm to Hunter (P-86046)

Dear Mr. Berkow:

This letter is in response to the NRC concerns discussed in Reference 1, regarding the startup check list for automatic operation of the Emergency Diesel Generatc.s, System Operating Procedure (SOP) 92-04, Section 2.2.

As previously noted in Reference 2, 50P 92-04 Section 2.2 has been revised to ensure that the valves associated with Emergency Diesel Generator service water, engine lube oil drains, and engine water jacket heaters are aligned correctly for automatic Emergency Diesel Generator operation.

In addition, PSC has initiated General Services Action Request (GSAR) - 1105, to assign valve numbers to all valves in the Emergency Diesel Generator Rooms.

This will include valves in the instrument air lines, which operate the service water temperature control val ves, engine lube oil drain valves and drain plugs, and engine water jacket heater valves.

PSC has implemented Procedure

The valve line-up

check list refers to the. instrument air valves for the service water temperature control valves, engine lube oil drain valves and drain plugs, and engine water jacket heater valves by nomenclature.

When valve numbers have been assigned to these valves, the valve line-up check list will be revised to refer to the valve numbers.

These administrative changes will ensure that the valve line-ups for the Emergency Diesel Generator auxiliary systems are correct, to support automatic operation of the Energency Diesel Generators, and that the valve line-up check and independent verification are documented.
