On February 2,

1985 the reactor was manually tripped during an orderly i

shutdown commenced when a hydrogen leak / oil mist was observed at the shaft seals of the Main Generator. The cause of the hydrogen leak was a malfunction of an oil filter in the seal oil supply line to the air side hydrogen seals.

Repairs were made to the filter which corrected the hydrogen leakage.

There was no impact on plant safety.

1 On February 2, 1985 while the plant was at full power, a main generator

{

hydrogen system trouble alarm annunciated.

Visual inspection of the - -

turbine generator revealed an oil mist at the shaft seals.

Further

.j inspection of the hydrogen seal oil unit revealed that the air side backup pump was in operation and the air si'de Cuno filter could not he rotated. The hydrogen pressure was observed to decrease.

i 4

A decision was made to vent the generator hydrogen and to proceed with an orderly shutdown.

At fifty percent of full power the reactor was manually tripped.

I J

l Subsequent examination of the Cuno filter indicated that internal j

supports' had most likely failed as a result of incorrect reassembly.

H This. resulted in an inability to clean the Cuno filter, which had clogged' causing the sequence of. events described.

The Cuno filter was b

repaired and,placed back ~1n service.

The hydrogen seal oil unit was then manner and the plant was [j

shown - to be functioning in a.,sa,tisfactory il returned

  • to normal operation.

A new duplex filter is being order. to

~

k replace the current filter.

This is intended to assure that at least one l1 filter will be available.

O There wa r-no effect upon plant safety; the Peactor Protection System operated as designed.
