50-286, 50-549 Mr. Craig Davis RFD 1 and Route 22 IN RESPONSE REFER Brewster, NY 10509 TO F0IA-79-423

Dear Mr. Davis:

This is in partial response to your letter dated October 2,1979 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, documents relating to the Pawling, New York site.

Enclosed are documents listed on Appendix A which relate to the Pawling, New York site.

Additionally, NRC staff has provided the following information regarding the Pawling, New York site:

There were only two reactors on site; a third one, the sodium deuterium reactor (SDR) was never built.

To the best of the staff's knowledge no material was ever buried on the site.

No radioactive material was ever disposed of in the lake.

UNC had a contract to perform sodium water reaction experiments (non-nuclear) and some small quantities of sodium may have been disposed of in the lake.

UNC at Pawling operated a small contract facility and most of their contracts were with federal agencies, i.e., the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the Department of Defense (D00) and the National Aeronautics ar.d Space Administration (NASA).

UNC used to analyze fish from the lake routinely.

Results are not currently available.

No wet lands have ever been filled to the best of the staff's knowledge.

This information will also be made available for public inspection and copying at the following NRC Local Public Document Rooms (LPDR):
