A. INTRODUCTION
Section 70.24 of 10 CFR Part 70 requires criticalitydetection and alarm systems in any area containingspecial nuclear material when the licensee is authorizedto possess more than 500 grams of U-235, 300 grams ofPu, or 300 grams of U-233. This guide defines thecharacteristics of an acceptable audible alarm for use inthis and other instances where prompt, completeevacuation is required to prevent serious injury fromradiation exposure.
B. DISCUSSION
United States of America Standards InstituteSubcommittee N2.1, Ionizing Radiation Symbols, ColorCodes and other Identifying or Warning Devices,prepared standard N2.3-19671 which was approved bythe United States of America Standards Institute on'The United States of America Standards Institute becamethe American National Standards Institute, Inc., in 1969. The standard defines thecharacteristics of an immediate evacuation alarm systcm.
C. REGULATORY POSITION
The characteristics of an immediate evacuationsignal described in ANSI N2.3.1967, "ImmediateEvacuation Signal for Use in Industrial InstallationsWhere Radiation Exposure May Occur," are generallyacceptable for use wherever such a system may beneeded or required, subject to the following:1. The minimum duration of the signal should besufficient to ensure evacuation and permitimplementation of access control.2. Within a given facility or plant, the unique signaldescribed in N2.3-1967 should be consistent if used inmore than one location.3. In some cases, plant design features or operatingconditions may require alarms different from thatdescribed in the standard.
