SUBJECT:

Idaho Spent Fuel Facility L icense Expiration Date Extension, Docket 72-0025 (CLN210397)

REFERENCE:

Public Meeting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission July 16, 2020 (ADAMS Accession ML20 l 96L733)

Dear Sir or Madam:

On July 16, 2020, the Department of Energy, Idaho Cleanup Project (DOE-ICP) participated in a public meeting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to discuss Idaho Spent Fuel Faci lity (ISFF) 1-icense (SNM-2512) extension. This letter details the license extension strategy discussed with the NRC.

DOE-ICP plans to submit a License Amendment Request (LAR) seeking approval of a 20-year license extension that is consistent with 10 CFR 72 regulations. Since no facility construction or material procurement has been performed, the application will be based on the same technical basis reflected in the original Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) and Safety Evaluation Report (SER).

DOE-ICP plans to address certain technical and regulatory issues such as:

  • The TSFF FSAR and SER for any time-based technical analyses.
  • The Original Environmental Report and Environmental Impact Statement for any changes.
  • Any active exemptions and applicable NRC Orders.
  • Inspections of the material and canisters to be stored as well as the transfer cask.

We would appreciate your timely respouse to this LAR strategy. Please contact me directly at (208) 526-4993 or Steve Ahrendts at (208) 526-8888 with any question.

Sincerely, Digitally signed by Steven D. Steven D. Wahnschaffe Wahnschaffe Date: 2021.01.19 12:42:48 -07'00' Steven Wahnschaffe License Manager
