Dear Mr. Rowe:

l I

This is in reply to your June 16, 1975 letter to Mr. Lee V. Gossick i regarding Mr. C. Leslie Dawson's financial and technical assistance F request for studies at the Maxey Flats, Kentucky, comercial ' waste burial facility. We also received a request from Mr. Dawson dated May 13, 1975 for financial and technical assistance and we agree that, before a meeting is held with Kentucky to discuss his request, the in-volved Federal agencies should meet to review this matter.

Governor Carroll has requested the Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) to conduct an independent review of conditions at Maxey Flats and the i actions being taken by the State. Our review is nearing completion and i ve plan to present our findings to Governor Carroll in the near future. .

{ In addition, through our Agreement State program, we have a continuing responsibility for cooperation 1.ith Kentucky and for assessing the adequacy and compatibility of their radiation control program for agree-ment materials with that of the NRC.

We would be pleased to host a meeting of the Federal agencies at cur Bethesda, Maryland offices. Our staff contact is Mr. G. Wayne Kerr, Chief, Agreements and Exports Branch, Division of Materials and Fuel Cycle Facility Licensing, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission, Washington, D. C. 20555 (301 492-7767).
