OF THE MARCH 3, 2021, CATEGORY 1, PUBLIC TELECONFERENCE TO DISCUSS WESTINGHOUSE REQUEST TO EXTEND AP1000 DESIGN CERTIFICATION The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a Category 1 public teleconference on March 3, 2021, to discuss the Westinghouse Electric Co. (Westinghouse) five year extension request for the AP1000 design certification. Six members of the general public were present on the bridgeline but did not provide their names or ask any questions. One member from Naval Nuclear Labs participated.

U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION CATEGORY 1 PUBLIC TELECONFERENCE TO DISCUSS WESTINGHOUSE REQUEST TO EXTEND AP1000 DESIGN CERTIFICATION On March 3, 2021, the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation staff held a public meeting with Westinghouse to discuss their five year extension request for the AP1000 Design Certification (DC). This request would extend the period for which the AP1000 DC is able to be referenced by a combined license applicant from 15 to 20 years, resulting in a new expiration date of February 27, 2026. In a related Staff Requirements Memorandum for SECY-20-0082, Rulemaking Plan to Extend the Duration of the AP1000 Design Certification, the Commission approved the staffs recommendations to initiate a limited-scope rulemaking to amend Section VII in Appendix D to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 52, Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants, to extend the duration of the AP1000 design certification for an additional 5 years beyond the current expiration date of February 27, 2021, and to use the direct final rule process.
In order for NRC staff to ensure a complete AP1000 design per 10 CFR 52.54, Issuance of standard design certification, and proceed with the direct final rule process, Westinghouse agreed to submit applicable AP1000 DC markups and references (via letter to the NRC) that illustrate how (1) five select technical issues have been corrected based on current Vogtle AP1000 construction, and (2) the DCD would be marked-up in accordance with those changes.
These AP1000 DC markups and references will be verified by NRC staff when they are submitted.
At the conclusion of the meeting NRC staff opened up the meeting to questions from the general public with no questions being asked.
