' Background This radiographic operation was being conducted on a jet engine located in the Hawaiian Airlines maintenance shop of the Henolulu International Airpor The work had been authorized on a Form NRC-241, dated May 1, 1989, in accordance with the general license provision of 10 CFR 150.2 The Form NRC-241 was acknowledged on May 10, 1989 Ly R. The Inspector examined the shipping papers and the source overpack in accordance with DOT /NRC requirements. The shipping papers were complete i and acceptable. _The source overpack was properly identified and was labeled with a yellow two D0T labe No violations were identified.,

At the time of the inspection, the source was not exposed; therefore, signs and barrier ~were not in place. A discussion with the radiographer indicated that the required signs and~ barriers were present, and had been used during the earlier exposure -of the source. The utilization log '

The exposure device in use was a Gulf Nuclear Model 20 The device was properly identified and labeled to indicate the presence of an iridium-192 source of approximately 60 curies. The device appeared to be secured since the locking mechanism was engaged and the key had been removed from the lock box. The guide tube was in place and positioned in the jet engine housing. The drive cable was attached and positioned on the ground with approximately 25 to 30 feet between the exposure device and the cranking handl No violations were identifie . Conclusion The Inspector reviewcd the findings with the radiographer. He was told that no violations were identified and the operation was quite acceptabl ;
