DISCUSSION OT RESULTS Air Surveillance Air particulate activity reached maximum values in June or July and then decreased rapidly through September. This trend is to be anticipated from the normally observed annual cycle. The maximum values measurnd were significant-ly higher than those seen in 1970 due to the injection of new nuclear debris into the atmosphere in late 1970. The agreement between on-site and off-site stationu continues satisfactory. The reference station values are lower than the on-site I l and off-site results, unlike relative values seen earlier. These results should be followed closely to see if this As a permanent trend. Gamma dose measurement using thermoluminescent dosimeters appears satisfactory based on comparative on-site and off-site monthly and quarterly averages. The month to month variability at each location is still somewhat greater than desired. Continuing investigation indicates that this may be due to dif ferences in inherent background between individual dosimeters. Once individual inherent backgrounds have been established, previous data will be l adjusted to reficct this. Aquatic Surveillance  ; Domestic and recreation water samples showed values consistent with those seen previously. Great Pond gross beta values are again somewhat higher than others. Seawater fractional gross beta and specific nuclide values are similar to data observed previously. I Marine life results are also comparable to earlier data. ' Ce, 95 103, 106 2r and Ru continue to be present in rockweed and Irish moss samples. ________-__-_____-_a

i i l Bottom sediment samples show strong evidence for the presence of nuclides from the uranium and thorium decay series. l Terrestrial Surveillance Milk sample values are lu the same range as observed in previous j 1 periods. There does not appear to be any significant dif ference in trends j l between sample locations. , l Crop samples yield results similar to those obtained for earlier I 95 103, 106 l l samples. The hay sample showed the presence of Zr and possibly Ru. l All cranberry samples showed Cs in the gamma spectrum.

SUMMARY

The pre-operational environmental radiation surveillance program appears to be providing the correlation of data between locations which will permit meaningful comparisons for the operational data. The general variabili ty ( to be expected is also being defined. No changes in the program are recommended at this time. i 1
