2 INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental-monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.l.la(4),

~3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical I

Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual.- Program elements being conducted under contract to j GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and

, electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is td obtain a database ,

sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS).

4 Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in April 1987 (Table 1), with the exception of ichthyoplankton sampling during the week of 5 April. High river flow

(>150,000 cfs) and hazardous sampling conditions necessitated cancellation of the program until the following week.- The following changes in the TMINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule were made during April: seining originally

i. scheduled for 7 April was conducted on 15 April and t 1 i

.3 .

4 electrofishing scheduled for 15 April was completed on-22

April. River flow and turbidity are-given as rationale for these changes. Details are provided in the following pages
wherein progress for each program is described.

Data presented herein are considered provisional,

, pending subsequent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

8 Benthic Macroinvertebrates

, Objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three

stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

i Progress: Replicate (4) macroinvertebrate samples were-l collected at each of the three stations on 2 April 1987 I

(Table 1). Sorting of the 2 April samples has been completed; identification is in progress.

l l

l Ichthyoplankton r

Objective: To determine species composition, relative abundance, density, and seasonal and spatial l distribution of ichthyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Replicate (2) ichthyoplankton samples were taken at ea,ch of the eight stations on 14, 21, and 28 April 1987 (Table 1). Sampling during the week of 5 April was cancelled due to high river flow and hazardous sampling conditions. All samples collected through 14 April have-been sorted; no ichthyoplankton were found.

Seine Ob$ective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six stations on 15 April 1987 (Table 1). A total of 3325 fish of 7 species was collected (Table 2). Most fish (1788) were taken at Station 13B5; most species (6) were collected at Station 4A2. Spotfin shiner dominated the catch of each station. Parasites and anomalies observed were: anchor womrs (Lernaea) on 1 mimic shiner; black spot on 77 spotfin shiner, 3 bluntnose minnow, and 1 tessellated darter; and pugheadedness on 2 spotfin shiner and 3 mimic shiner.

3

m Electrofishing s

Objective: to assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species: diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Electrofishing at six stations was completed on 22-23 April 1987 (Table 1). A total of 301 fish of 17 species was collected (Table 3). More fish (90 specimens) were collected at Station llB1 than at any-other station; most species (12) wire collected from Station 13A1. Redbreast sunfish and pumpkinseed dominated the catch. Ectoparasites observed on fishes 1

collected were: anchor worms (Lernaea) on two pumpkinseed; and leeches on two channel catfish, seven redbreast sunfish, two pumpkinseed, and one smallmouth bass. Black spot was observed on one walleye.

Creel Survey Objective: To investigate the extent of success of sportfishing, and determine angler-residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near TMINS.

4

Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 9, 11, 14, and 19 April 1987 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 322 anglers who reportedly fished 513.16 hours1.851852e-4 days
0.00444 hours
2.645503e-5 weeks
6.088e-6 months
, caught 624 fish, and harvested 278 fish (44.6% of'the total catch)

(Tables 4 through 7). The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per effort were 1.22 and 0.54 per hour, respectively. 'Smallmouth bass and walleye were the predominant fishes caught (113 and 162 specimens, respectively); pumpkinseed and bluegill dominate those harvested (60 and 46 specimens, respectively). Most anglers (138) and most hours fished (216.08) were recorded at the York Haven Generating Station. Most fish were caught (262) and harvested (140) from the East Dam, which also produced the highest c/e (3.26).

Anglers were predominantly residents of York or Dauphin counties and the majority indicated that they eat at least a portion of their catch.

Water Quality Analysis Objective: To measitre select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of TMINS concurrent with General Ecological Survey samples.

5

1 Progress: Water quality samples were collected on 2 April 1987 and forwarded to TMI-EC (Table 1). Selected s

water quality parameters were also measured at sampling times and locations described in the Aquatic Sampling Manual.
