INTRODUCTION '

The objective of this monthly report is to document I compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental .

monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4),

3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical

~'

Specifications (ETS). These programs are being carried out I

as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling i

Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation are benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient ,

to establinh the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem, ;

! and identify any significant biological alterations !

i resulting from the operation of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS). }

i

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in September 1988 (Table 1). Inclement weather resulted in i changes to the TMINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule for !

September. The seine program had to be rescheduled f rc'.n 13 to 14 September due to heavy rain and windy weather conditions. I Data presented herein are considered provisional, I pending subsequent proofing, analysis, and presentation in I the annual report.

e

Benthic Macroinvertebrates objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

~'

Progress: Replicate (4) macroinvertebrate samples were collected at each of the three stations on 1 September 1988 (Table 1). Sorting of the 1 September samples was completed. Analysis of the 7 July samples has been 50%

completed.

Ichthyoplankton Objective: To determine species composition, relative abundance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ichthyoplank ton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Field sampling for ichthyoplankton was completed on 30 August 1988 (Table 1). All samples collected through 30 August have been sorted; identifications have been completed through May 1988.

Analysis of the 8 June was initiated.

2

I j Seine Objective: To assess species composition; relative abundance; seasonal and spatial distribution; condition factor; occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and fish kills; and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to

~'

seine capture at six stations in the vicinity of THINS.

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six stations on 14 and 27 September 1988 (Table 1).

Samples collected through 27 June have been processed; work was initiated on 11 July samples. Results of the June 1988 samples are being tabulated and will appear in the October report.

Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative 3 abundance, occurrence of parasites and anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher captured at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Pro 9;ess Electrofishing at six stations was completed on 7-8 and 20 September 1988 (Table 1). A combined total of 1447 fish of 23 species was collected in September (Tables 2 and 3). Most fish (381 specimens) were collected at Station 10A3; most species (17) were taken at Station 11B1. The catch was dominated by the 3

smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, and gizzard shad. '

Redbreast sunfish, bluegill, spottail shiner, largemouth bass, and walleye were also common. Ectoparasites and anomalies were observed on 64 fish of 11 species; anchor worms (Lernaea) and skin infections were most prevalent.

Smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, and largemouth bass were most commonly affected.

Creel Survey objective: To investigate the extent and success of sportfishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near TMINS.

Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 3, 18, 22, and 26 September 1988 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 440 anglers who fished 1001.79 hours9.143519e-4 days
0.0219 hours
1.306217e-4 weeks
3.00595e-5 months
, caught 1415 fish, and harvested 236 fish (16.7% of the total catch)

(Tables 4 through 7). The average catch per effort and harvest per effort were 1.41 and 0.24 fish per hour, respectively. Smallmouth bass, sunfishes (Lepomis spp.), and channel catfish were the predominant fishes caught (882, 238, and 104 specimens, respectively).

Fishing pressure was greatest in the General Reservoir with 298 anglers fishing a total of 735.54 hours6.25e-4 days
0.015 hours
8.928571e-5 weeks
2.0547e-5 months
. Most fish were caught (1189) and harvested (157) from the General Recervoir area. The highest catch per effort 4

i (1.62) and harvest per effort (0.33) occurred at the General Reservoir and York Haven Generating Station '

areas, respectively. Anglers were predominantly residents of York or Dauphin counties, and the majority indicated that they eat or would eat a portion of their

~

catch. ,

i Water Quality Analysis Objective: To measure select physical and chemical ;

parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of i TMINS concurrent with General Ecological Survey samples. I Progress: Water quality samples were collected on 1 September 1988 (Table 1) and forwarded to TMI-EC for analysis of TDS. Selected water quality parameters were l also measured at the sampling times and locations I described in the Aquatic Sampling Manual, f i i f
