SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING BETWEEN SNEC AND THE NRC STAFF On December 4,1997, representatives of the NRC staff were briefed on the status of the SNEF site and the licensees' plans for decommissioning activities. Enclosure 1 is a list of i meeting attendees. Enclosure 2 is the briefing material provided by the licensees at the meeting. i The licensees discussed the current status of the site and reviewed the recent licensing history. The licensees currently have an einendment request under consideration by the ,
staff that would remove the license and technical specification restrictions on decommissioning activities at the site. A presentation was made or, the large component removal project in which the licensees are planning the removal and shipment of the reactor vessel, steam generatU and pressurizer to a waste disposal site. This activity is planned for the ttird quarter of 1998.
The NRC staff mentioned the need for the staff to review the licensees' waste classification to confirm that the requirements of 10 CFR Parts 20 and 61 will be met for the disposal of the large components. -The licensees stated that some information about waste classification has been submitted to the docket and additionalinformation was still under development.
The licensees described their public communications activities at Saxton incluulng the Citizens Task Force. The Chair of the task force was in attendance at the meeting and stated in response to a question from the NRC staff that he believed that the licensees were doing a good job but that some citizens are still concerned about radiation Jafety during decommissioning.
