Facility: Wisconsin Electric Power Company, Point Beach Unit 1 (Docket No. 50-262) Two Creeks, Wisconsin

Subject:

REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM STEAM LEAK

. WisconsinElectricPowerCompanyreportedthatondune 20,1977, at about 1:00 p.m., the containment gaseous and particulate radiation monitors alarmed. This was followed by containment sump A high level alarm. From the frequency the sump was pumped, the reactor steam leak rate was calculated to be 6.5 gpm. Entry into containment determined steam was leaking from the area near the top of the pressurizer, but the actual leak source could not be identified due *i the steam. The facility Technical Specifications permit cont ., uperation with reactor coolant leakage up to 10 gpm provided the leak source is known.

The licensee reported that no Technical Specifications were violated, and there was no uncontrolled release of gaseous or liquid effluents.

The licensee started shutdown and cooldown of the plant at approximately 3:00 p.m. to determine the exact source of the leak and to make necessary repair 3.

') After the plant was cooled down and personnel were able to enter the area, the leak was located at the pressurizer spray valve. The leak to contain-i ment was through a failed pressure gauge sensing line.

MS An inspector from RIII (Chicago) has been sent to the site to review the event.

A press release is being made by RIII (Chicago) and the licensee. No

, ~ estimate of duratifon .of plant shutdown is available at this time. ~--"---

4 The RIII (Chicago) office received notification of this occurrence by telephune from the acting plant manager at 4:10 p.m. on June 20, 1977.
