REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: NR-300-S-852-S DATE: OCT 21 1998 PAGE 2 OF 6 SEALED SOURCE TYPE: Radiography Source Assembly DESCRIPTION:
The Gamma industries Model "B" series source assemblies are designed for use in Budd Company and Automation industries exposure devices, as shown in the attached pigtail selection chart (Limitations and/or Other Considerations of Use section).
The first charact'er in the source model designation indicates that the source assembly is designed f; use in one of these devices. The second character is a ccle for the dimension of the source assembly. The third (last) character in the source model number designates the type of connector. "A" indicates a Gamma Industries long Saf-T-Key connector, "T" indicates a Tech-Ops connector, "C" indicates a Budd (clevis) connector, and "G" indicates a Gamma industries short Saf-T-Key connector.
Iridium sources have a single encapsulation, while the Cobalt sources have double encapsulation. Single encapsulation may use either an end-cap or side-weld. Double encapsulation will use only an end-cap weld, and all encapsulation is accomplished using a Heliarc (TIG) welding technique. Sources are encapsulated in either Type 304 or 316 stainless steel. Capsule wall thickness is maintained at a minimum of 0.030" (0.76 mm). The connector, locking ball, and source capsule are crimped to 3/32" (2.38 mm) diameter stainless steel cable except for the Automation Model 520. Overall pigtail dimensional tolerance is plus or minus 1/16" (1.59 mm).
LABELING:
The source capsules are not large enough to allow direct labeling; however, the exposure device which contains the source capsule is labeled. For additional labeling information, please refer to the particular exposure device in which the source is to be used.

E The Gamma? Industries Model "B" series source assemblies, are I designed-for use in the Budd Company and Automation Industries I industrial radiography exposure devices shown in the pigtail 1 I
~ selection' chart. l The "B"' series source assembly consists of a single or double encapsulated universal capsule. The manufacturer states that sprototype' sources have met the criteria specified in ANSI !
publication N542-1977 and have a classification of ANSIE77E43515.
This ' source series- also has Eul IAEA Certificate of Competent
~
Authority, Special Form Radioactive Material' Encapsulation, Certificate Number USA /0166/S Revision 1. Based on prototype
~ ~
test-' data these designs are expected to retain containment integrity'under accident conditions most likely to occur during normal use or transportation.
! PROTOTYPE TESTING:
For information concerning prototype testing, please see the "Abilityfof1 Sealed Source to Withstand Loss of Containment Under Abnormal Conditions."
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
The dose rate:for Iridium-192 is 5.9-R/hr per Curie at 1 foot ll (3 0. 4 8 cm) . The dose rate'for Cobalt-60 is'14.4 R/hr per Curie j
' at11 ' foot . (3 0. 48 cm) .

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
Each pigtail assembly is. subjected to a 180 lb. (81.65 kg) pull test prior to radioactive material insertion and subjected to a wipe test after the material is sealed in the capsule. If the results of the wipe test are doubtful, then a hot water bubble test 1is performed. No source will be shipped if removable contamination exceeds 0.005 microcurie (185-Bq). Source activities are checked against a standard by using an ion chamber. A decay chart and source tag are supplied with each source, providing information concerning the activity and leak test results.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
. Series "B" sources shall be possessed and used by specific licensees of the U.S. NRC or Agreements States.
. Series "B" sealed sources shall not b'e subjected to environmental or'other conditions of use which exceed ANSI classification 77E43515.
. Series "B" sources shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed six (6)' months using techniques approved by the licensing authority.and capable'of detecting at least
. 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
. Series "B" source assembly shall b'e used only in the
~
following radiographic exposure devices:
. Handling, storage,;use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the" licensing authority.
. This registration sheet ~and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.
