NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, REGION IV 611 Ryan Plaza Drive - Suite 400 Arlington TX 76011-8064 No. IV-02-038 August 12, 2002 CONTACT: Roger Hannah E-mail: opa4@nrc.gov Phone: 817-860-8128 NRC INSPECTION TEAM TO DISCUSS RESULTS OF RECENT INSPECTION AT COOPER NUCLEAR STATION AUGUST 22 A team of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors, who recently completed a three-week, supplemental inspection of the Cooper Nuclear Station, will discuss the results of that inspection at a public meeting in Peru, Nebraska, on Thursday, August 22. The Cooper Station is located near Brownville, Nebraska, and is operated by Nebraska Public Power District.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. (CDT) in the Theater at Peru State College, 600 Hoyt Street, in Peru. After discussing the inspection results, NRC inspectors will be available before the end of the meeting to answer any questions.

A supplemental inspection is one that is added to the NRCs normal, or baseline, inspection program in response to declining regulatory performance. The supplemental inspection at the Cooper plant is the most extensive called for under NRCs inspection program. The inspection was performed by a 13-member team led by Kriss Kennedy, chief of the branch that oversees Cooper in the NRC Region IV office in Arlington, Texas.

Declining performance at Cooper led to the inspection, but the NRC believes the plant continues to be operated safely. A final report for the Cooper inspection is expected to be issued by the end of August.
