NOTIFICATION OF THE INTENT TO STORE FUEL IN AN INDEPENDENT SPENT FUEL STORAGE INSTALLATION Ladies and Gentlemen:

Pursuant to 10 CFR 72.212(b)(1)(i), Progress Energy Carolinas (PEC), Inc., also known as Carolina Power and Light Company, hereby proyldes notification of its intent to store spent nuclear fuel in dry storage in an Independent Spent Fuel;Stbrage Installation (ISFSI) at the H. B.

Robinson Steam Electric Plant (HBRSEP),- Unit No. 2, site. The reactor license for HBRSEP, Unit No. 2, is issued to Carolina Power and Light Company, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the reactor site address is 3581 West Entrance Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.

This notification is related to an ISFSI that is currently under construction at the HBRSEP, Unit No. 2, site. Fuel loading is currently scheduled to commence in July 2005. The new ISFSI will be operated under a general license associated with Transnuclear, NUHOMS System, Certificate of Compliance No. 1004. PEC currently operates and maintains a separate ISFSI at the HBRSEP, Unit No. 2, site under a site-specific license (Docket No. 72-3/License No. SNM-2502).

A response to this letter is requested for the purpose of receiving a Docket Number for the new ISFSI to be used as a reference in subsequent correspondence.
