March 12, 2007 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-III-07-004A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.
Facility Licensee Emergency Classification Kewaunee Notification of Unusual Event Dominion Energy Alert Kewaunee, WI Site Area Emergency Docket: 50-305 General Emergency License: DPR-43 x Not Applicable
SUBJECT:
KEWAUNEE REACTOR SHUTDOWN (UPDATE)
DESCRIPTION:
On Friday, March 9, 2007, the licensee restarted the Kewaunee Power Station after a 10-day outage. The outage was the result of an automatic reactor trip that occurred while the licensee was conducting a routine test of a nuclear power measuring instrument. The licensee was unable to identify the problem that resulted in the automatic trip, but did replace 88 relays associated with the reactor trip system. In addition, maintenance activities and engineering evaluations related to plant electrical systems were completed during the outage in response to questions raised by the NRC during a recent Component Design Bases Inspection.
The NRC resident inspectors monitored the licensees troubleshooting and maintenance activities, and observed the restart of the reactor.
The State of Wisconsin was notified.
This information is current as of 7:00 a.m. on March 12, 2007.
The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
