SUBJECT:
SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR COMPONENT COOLING HEAT EXCHANGER DESCRIPTION:
At 11:43 a.m. CDT on May 5, 2002, the licensee began a reactor shutdown to repair the A heat exchanger in the safety-related Component Cooling Water system. The heat exchanger was declared inoperable when it was removed from service to investigate tube leakage within the heat exchanger of approximately 0.37 gallons per minute.
The leakage entered the service water system which discharges to Lake Michigan. There was no measurable radioactivity in the water discharged to the lake.
The licensee is developing its repair plans, including possible sleeving and/or plugging of the heat exchanger tubes found to be leaking.
The resident inspectors are monitoring the licensees investigation and repair efforts.
The State of Wisconsin will be informed. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
The licensee notified the NRC Operations Center of the shutdown at 12:53 p.m. CDT on May 5, 2002. This information is current as of 1 p.m. CDT on May 7, 2002.
